Across our academic exchange at Lycée Seydou Nourou Tall and Les Maristes Catholic High School, we engaged in both French and English classrooms, gaining insight into instructional practices while building meaningful connections with students. Following these visits, we participated in collaborative cultural activities, including traditional Senegalese and American games, fostering mutual learning and joy. The experience was further enriched by a shared communal meal featuring thieboudienne, offering a deeper appreciation of Senegalese culture and hospitality. Our time concluded with a formal welcome and institutional presentation, alongside a vibrant cultural performance that underscored the significance of cross-cultural exchange, community, and global understanding.

Insitutional Visit & Sightseeing: Ministry of Education & Lake Retba (Pink Lake)
Students and administrators visited the Ministry of Education of Senegal in Diamniadio, where we gained valuable insight into Senegal’s national education system, policies, and ongoing development initiatives aimed at expanding educational opportunities and innovation.
Nature & Closing Dinner: Bandia Reserve
With 202 steps leading to the top, this monument stands as a powerful symbol of the resilience and liberation of the Senegalese people while also offering quite the climb. Inside, visitors can explore three museum levels featuring diverse artworks and exhibits that celebrate and reflect significant moments in African history and culture.
Students visited Lake Retba, also known as Lac Rose or the “Pink Lake,” is famous for its striking pink waters caused by a high concentration of salt and algae. We learned about the lake’s importance to the local economy, particularly the traditional salt harvesting industry that supports many families in the surrounding communities.
The IFAN Museum also known as the Cheikh Anta Diop Museum, this laboratory houses the research and legacy of Cheikh Anta Diop, a renowned scholar recognized for his contributions to Carbon-14 dating research. In addition to preserving his work, the laboratory contains extensive collections and genetic archives of marine species, terrestrial animals, insects, and plant life, serving as an important center for scientific and historical study.
Culture & Institutions: IFAN Museum & African Renaissance Monument
Memory & Heritage: Gorée Island & Museum of Black Civilizations
Students visited Gorée Island, a powerful historical site that serves as a reminder of the millions of Africans impacted by the transatlantic slave trade. During the visit, participants explored the House of Slaves, where they learned about the inhumane conditions endured by enslaved Africans before being forced onto ships bound for the Americas. .
The Museum of Black Civilizations showcases the rich history, achievements, and cultural contributions of Black civilizations from across Africa and the African diaspora. Through its exhibits, artwork, and historical artifacts, the museum highlights the diversity, resilience, and global influence of African peoples throughout history.
The group closing dinner provided participants with an opportunity to reflect on their experiences, celebrate the connections they built throughout the trip, and share memorable moments from their journey in Senegal.
Bandia Reserve offered the opportunity to experience Senegal’s wildlife and natural environment through an immersive safari tour. During the visit, participants observed a variety of animals, including giraffes, zebras, rhinos, antelopes, and monkeys, while learning about conservation efforts and the importance of protecting West Africa’s ecosystems.
